Plea for SFL Junior Trainers

Southern Football League junior matches may have to be abandoned if a critical shortage of trainers is not addressed.

The league is crying out for more trainers, with some already covering up to seven matches each weekend.

Southern Trainers Association president Hank Middleton said most SFL clubs were “three to five trainers short” to assist with game day and training injuries.

With many clubs fielding up to 15 teams each weekend, Mr Middleton, who is head trainer for Happy Valley, said some trainers were forced to cover multiple games each weekend.

The shortage was highlighted two weeks ago with one team unable to provide a trainer for four matches.

“Luckily the opposition club was able to cover for them,” Mr Middleton said.

If neither club is able to provide a trainer, the match must be abandoned.

“We’re not far off that level … in the meantime, it puts pressure on the other trainers who might have just worked Saturday but have to double up and help out on Sunday to cover,” Mr Middleton said.

Mr Middleton and SFL clubs are calling on more volunteer trainers. They must have a senior first aid or approved sports first aid certificate or be willing to complete one.

If you do require any extra training, then please speak to Hank, as the club will often cover any costs incurred in order for you to meet the minimum guidelines as a trainer within the SFL.

For the moment, some items may appear to be missing or incomplete, but this will progressively be rectified over the next few weeks.
